With all the over Viagra and the generic versionsildenafilnow available in pharmacies, the natural assumption is that Tesco and Boots are the places to buy it – the cheapest and easiest avenues to get your sex life back on track.

But while it would be easy to simply walk into your nearest Tesco or Boots pharmacy and ask for a pack from behind the counter, let’s investigate whether it really is possible to buy Viagra during a trip to the supermarket, and if there is another, more convenient alternative out there.

Background:The objective of this study was to identify and compare the efficacy and safety of sildenafil (Viagra) or vardenafil (Levitra) in the treatment of ED in men with erectile dysfunction (ED).
Methods:This was a double-blind, placebo-controlled, single-center study that included 52 participants. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two sildenafil groups (n = 52) or placebo (n = 52) for 8 weeks. The study was conducted at the University of Florida Medical Center. The patients had been evaluated with an ED questionnaire at the time of enrollment. The patients were also assessed for erectile function with a self-administered ED questionnaire at baseline and then on the next 4 weeks. The primary outcome was the percentage of successful sexual intercourse attempts in the sildenafil group at the end of the 8 weeks of treatment. The secondary outcome was the percentage of ED events reported with sildenafil and placebo. The primary outcome was the percentage of successful intercourse attempts and erectile function, but the secondary outcome was sexual function at baseline.
Results:A total of 52 participants (n = 52) participated. Mean age was 57 years (range 21-87) and mean duration of ED was 7.6 years (range 0-36). Erectile function was assessed at baseline, at 8 weeks, and at 4 weeks. Patients receiving sildenafil had a significantly greater percentage of ED events (69%) compared to those receiving placebo (33%) (p <.001). The percentage of successful intercourse attempts at the 8-week follow-up period in the sildenafil group was significantly greater than in the placebo group (29% vs. 10%). Patients receiving sildenafil reported an average of 1.8 attempts per participant in the sildenafil group compared to a 2.5 attempts per participant in the placebo group (p <.05). Patients who received sildenafil had a significantly greater percentage of ED events compared to those who received placebo (21% vs. 9%) (p <.001). In addition, patients receiving sildenafil reported an average of 3 attempts per participant (range 1-9) compared to a 4 attempt per participant in the placebo group (p <.05). Patients who received sildenafil had a significantly greater percentage of ED events compared to those receiving placebo (16% vs. 6%) (p <.001).
Conclusion:The safety and efficacy of sildenafil and vardenafil for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men with ED are comparable. However, the treatment of ED with sildenafil may be more efficacious than vardenafil for the treatment of ED.
